Choosing the Right Leather

Antique Rub-off

Description:
An extensive range of rub-off antique leathers that have been buffed and corrected to remove imperfections and embossed with a traditional print.  The topcoat can be removed to reveal its base coat for a two-tone effect, this is then sealed with a lacquer.

Cleaning: a damp cloth and a pure mild soap solution will remove most stains. Care should be taken not to soak the leather. Do not use a detergent.

Crystal

Description:
Crystal is a lightly buffed; semi aniline leather finished with a blend of oils and waxes to achieve a cracked, almost distressed finish with a slight pull-up effect.

These are aniline leathers, tanned to ensure a pleasing distressed finish. Extra fat liquors are applied during tannage, to give the leather a waxy feel. The leathers are designed to allow the natural variations of the leather to show through the finished coat. Pull up leathers do not have a consistent colour density across the whole hide. They are also designed to change colour when pulled or stretched. These types of leathers are not as colour fast as pigmented hides and should be protected from direct sunlight and not placed next to radiators and other heat sources where the wax could dry out. Evidence of marks and scarring will be seen through the surface finish. Each hide is unique and swatch samples should be regarded as no more than a guide for these types of leather.

Cleaning: a slightly dampened cloth and a pure mild soap solution can be used for light marks. Do not wet the leather as water staining may occur. Do not use detergent products.

Newcastle, Hand Dyed

Description:
Newcastle is a full grain, leather finished with a blend of oils to achieve a pull-up effect and a glossy finish.  Newcastle comes into its own when used on tightly upholstered applications as the colours change on the furniture creating a classic “old saddle” appearance.  Healed scars, scratches, neck and belly wrinkles will be apparent throughout these hides.  Since Newcastle is pure aniline leather, hides will fade in prolonged sunlight.

Cleaning: a slightly dampened cloth and a pure mild soap solution can be used for light marks. Do not wet the leather as water staining may occur. Do not use detergent products.

Victorian, Hand Dyed

Description:
Vegetable tanned in a traditional way, this leather is of the highest quality.  Aniline dyed and hand padded to give a unique finish.

This is a full grain aniline leather produced on only the best quality hides. It is hand finished and polished to give a unique look. No two hides will be identical; some areas of the hide will be much darker than others due to undergoing hand padding with the application of a darker topcoat as the final finishing process.

Cleaning: a slightly dampened cloth and a pure mild soap solution can be used for light marks. Do not wet the leather as water staining may occur. Do not use detergent products.

Samples

Please note that inevitably there are slight differences in shade, texture and shine from one batch to another, it is for this reason that we recommend the samples are to be regarded only as a guide to colour and finish
